Role Photo has in Communication

The role photography has in communication is very important. Photography can impose ideas onto people. Photos can give someone a sense of national unity or give some people ideas that are wrong but by the way the photo is protrayed they believe it is the correct thing to do.

This picture give me the sense on national pride and unity.

This picture may also have given to some people a sense of national pride or unity. But, it protrays the wrong message and because of that many people believe in him and followed what he said.

This is how i see the role of photography in communication.

Final project idea

For my final project I have decided to find a song that I like and try to tell the story/song through pictures and write a narrative under the pictures.

Final Project Criteria:

1.) Print Craftsmanship
2.) Film Exposure
3.) Use of light and shadow
4.) Setting of the picture...(does it fit what your trying to say)
5.) Atmosphere and mood

Picture Analysis

Picture Analysis

Chris Lyons:

This picture really caught my eye when we were doing the class analysis. I loved the ghosting in the picture. It’s something that I haven’t thought about doing since the pinhole cameras. When I look at the picture, I get the feeling of death. It is like a haunting feeling. I’m not one to believe in ghosts but this picture kind of makes me think, “What if.” The room also feels like it could have been abandoned, there isn’t much use of bed sheets and it looks like there is a sheet covering furniture. I really like the lighting in this room because although it has the death feeling, the lighting doesn’t have that same feeling. The lighting in this room I get the feeling for something new, something born again. I get that feeling because its like the sun is coming up to start a new day. A new day is being born, so I have these conflicting feelings from this picture. I think this is a really good portrait because it has good lighting, the picture is focused on Chris, its something out of ordinary, and it keeps you interested and it makes you think about what he is trying to say. So this is why I think this is a good self-portrait and why this unique picture caught my eye.

Protrait/Self-Protrait

I don't really know how the portratis and self protraits will turn out. I don't feel too confident about my photos. I had trouble thinking about to to photo. It will be interesting to see my negatives once they are processed.

Light and Shadow

The light and shadow photos came out a lot better than the photo from the assignments before. I'am understanding how to take these photos now and it makes things so much easier.

Getting Better

I'm am getting better at taking pictures. Most of my early photos were either too dark or too light and the quality of the photographs weren't that good. But now I understand how to take photographs and my photos are coming out a lot better, which I'm really glad about.

Trouble

I have had some trouble making the contact sheets for my negatives. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. So this last assignment has taken so long.

Library Assignment

(1)Peter Hujas - "A Retrospective"

-Leroy Street, 1983

-It feels like you're walking the street by yourself and it feels a little scary. You feel very isolated.

(2)Arthur Tress - "A Retrospective"

-Telephone on Bed, New York, New York, 1982

-Another feeling of isolation and lonliness. Feels like someone had left the room in a hurry.

(3)Edward Weston - "Portraits"

-Jose Clemente Orozco, 1930

-He has piercing eyes, it looks like he is looking right through you.

(4)Diane Arbus - "An Aperture Monograph"

-Child with a toy hand grenade in Central Park, NYC, 1962

-The boy looks crazed and you don't know its a toy grenade until you look at the title. You have know idea what the little kid is going to do.

(5)Julia Margaret - "Cameron's Women"

-She walks in Beauty, September 1874

-I don't really like her photos, they look too old and they ovbiously are.

Pin Hole Camera

Making the pinhole camera very interesting. After taking a few pictures with my camera, I thought that my negatives came out really good. However, getting a good positive took much longer. It took a couple tries for my positives to come out the way i wanted them too. I also tried ghosting in one of my pictures. The overall experience of the pinhole camera was a pretty good one.

photo class

I'm taking this class because photography is something that has always interested me.

My expectations of this class is that it will be very challenging, but very fun at the same time.

My personal goals is to become a better photographer and a more abstract thinker.
